Taken from a small rural village when he was 11 years old, Li Cunxin was one of the last chosen to study at Madam Mao's Beijing Dance Academy. He was offered a scholarship to study with the Huston Ballet where two years later he defected to the United States, which set off a flurry of political controversy.
